The Gatehouse

Exterior - Front # 2.jpg

The Gatehouse was designed in a French chateau-inspired style, each bay in the living and dining rooms features a pair of French doors that are topped with a rectangular transom. Other notable exterior features are the Vermont slate roof, the steeply pitched hip roof decorated with copper flashing and mahogany finials. A covered front porch spans the entire first floor.

The Gatehouse's elegant plaster walls, oak hardwood floors, high ceilings and mahogany spiral staircase reflect the wealth and influence Walter Langdon, Jr. incorporated into its appearance.

After having undergone significant restoration in 2016 the Gatehouse continues to be this beautifully-detailed historic home with all the comforts of the 21st Century for guests to enjoy.

The Carriage House

Carriage House # 1.jpg

Today, the term ‘Carriage House’ has a romantic appeal that belies its humble beginnings as an outbuilding for horse-drawn carriages and tack. The structures sometimes contained living quarters for grooms and liveried coachmen. The animals themselves were commonly kept in a separate barn nearby, although occasionally the carriage house served as a home for the horses as well. Over time, carriage houses on large estates were transitioned to serve as detached garages with the advent of the horseless carriage, commonly with second-floor living space for chauffeurs and staff.

Yearning for a modern Carriage House, Architect Serge Young was commissioned, and the end result is astounding. Rough hewn wood, large sliding doors, four gabled dormers, a ribbed metal roof and wood clapboard siding make the Carriage House blend with and complement the grandeur of the Gatehouse.
